First Glimpse of Canada
May 28 - July 9, 2010
The artists featured in this exhibition are among the early pioneers of Canadian art - the first to successfully adapt foreign painting styles to the Canadian experience. Their plein air techniques anticipated the Group of Seven some four decades later. Travelling vast distances on horseback, by canoe, and later, transcontinental rail, they portrayed the beauty of rural Ontario and the majesty of the West. Today, their paintings are found in all major public collections including the National Gallery of Canada.
